An Oakfield woman who embezzled more than $100,000 from a Fond du Lac church will spend nine months in jail.
Laura J. Craig, 50, entered a no contest plea Friday for the crime of taking at least $113,000 from the Salem United Methodist Church, while she served as the church's bookkeeper between January 2007 and May 2008.
An insurance company presented a dollar amount of $113,000. The church is claiming Craig took $138,000.
Assistant District Attorney Kimberly Tenerelli said Craig has already paid back approximately $85,000.
"I would just like to say I am very sorry to the members of the church," Craig said. "Please except my apologies for betraying your trust in my position. It will never happen again. I know many of you supported me through this and helped me through this and I really do appreciate that."
Craig said she had no real excuses other than being caught in debt.
